The Final Details

Just a few pictures of some of the little things that came together over the last couple of days to make the lounge project complete:

It’s ready!!!

There’s only one thing left to say.  Welcome Back, Teachers. Welcome Back.

Major Progress!

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of activity.  Patty Paone cleaned the refrigerator.  Clara Bisaillon and Anne Cardany put together the large cabinet.  Harmon Tunison and Dennis Cooper installed the counters, sink, and faucet.  The original large bulletin board was cut into 3 pieces, and Beth Fritzeen and Chris McKenna picked out new fabric to cover them with. They also reupholstered the chairs, and Beth made a valence for the window.  Clara’s brother installed the bathroom flooring last week, and Harmon started trimming the woodwork to accommodate the last of the flooring.  Chris and Keith McKenna hung up the bulletin boards and the pictures that Michele had taken around the school.  Michele scrubbed out all the recycling bins and Clara spray painted them black metallic.  Lisa Omicinski and Alex Tunison painted the quarter round, which was cut and installed by Beth.  Carolyn Scott picked up the cabinet knobs and Gary Normington installed them.  Karen ironed the tablecloths that were donated by Patty.  Anne donated a mirror for the bathroom and hung it with hardware donated by Wayside Hardware in Scotia.  We got a lot accomplished, more than I can even list here.  Whew, we’re tired!  Only a few more details to attend to on Tuesday morning, and then the room is officially ready for our teachers.

The Floors Are Done! Almost. Sort Of.

The floor went in over the weekend, thanks entirely to John Yagielski and Clara’s brother, Bob.  Only one more little strip needs to be done in the main room, plus the bathroom.  The main room looks so much more bright and cheerful.  Karen brought us lunch, and Patty deep-cleaned the refrigerator.  We worked through a thunderstorm and saw a house across the street get struck by lightening (no one was home).

At the end of the day, we also moved in the new stove, which is a beautiful black and stainless glass top that we got for practically nothing from the kind folks at Marcella’s Appliances in Schenectady.  John and Bob got the sink cabinet put together.  Dennis and Harmon are going to put together the rest of the cabinets and countertop sometime this week or next, and then we can decorate.  It really feels like it’s coming together.

What to Hang on the Walls???

Pam had the idea of taking some close-up images around the building and printing them in black and white to hang in the room. Here’s what I have at this point. We can fit four 16″x16″ square prints above the cabinets. Send me your feedback – thanks!

Girl Power

OK – I got the sink dislodged from the counter all by myself.  The custodians were duly unimpressed, but I was very proud of myself.  Hey, it was dirty and rusty, and I had to lie on the gross floor!

Now what to do with the sink…

The Painting is Done (finally!)

Just a couple pictures to show the completed painting, in the still-messy room.

Last Week’s Paint Job!

The room is looking so much better already. Village Paint in Scotia donated paint AND primer for the main room – thank you so much! The primer was even tinted so we would only need to do one coat of paint – which is great since getting up on those ladders to do 12 foot ceilings is pretty scary. The room is now all painted and primed. (Even Sophie and Kay Kay helped, and a former Sac student, Alexis!)

The bathroom was pretty challenging – every color we tried looked horrible – we think it is due to a big fluorescent light in a little room. We finally settled on a darker shade of the main room (but amazingly – it does not match – the light issue again.)

The carpet and the pad are out – a messy job, as the pad was glued down. The floor is now quite tacky to walk on. But everything looks so fresh and clean. Just a little more trim to finish today, and then we can begin the floor…

So, it’s a mess…

Last week we succeeded in making the teacher lounge look even worse than it did when school let out. Boxes everywhere, plaster on the floor, tables full of stuff. It was a mess.

But it’s getting better already. Clara and Anne packed up the room. Dave got the cabinets out. Michele and Beth broke apart the crumbling plaster over the sink and put a few layers of joint compound on it. The custodians helped us get out the tables and fridge, and the gross carpet too!

Now the room is empty and ready for painting, which takes place today…

The stove comes today too!
